Brussels, March 27, 2024

The European Commission unveiled a package of groundbreaking proposals aimed at transforming the landscape of higher education in Europe. Adopted on March 27, the package aims to create a universal European degree, acting as a catalyst for unprecedented transnational cooperation among European academic institutions.

At the heart of the plan is the establishment of a new qualification - the European degree - designed to be universally recognized and respected across all European Union member states. This initiative marks a significant step towards the realization of the European education area, facilitating student mobility and promoting cultural and linguistic diversity.

The plan includes a detailed pathway for transnational cooperation among higher education institutions, with the goal of harmonizing teaching, learning, and assessment criteria. This will ensure that the European degree maintains the highest quality standards and reflects the best academic practices across Europe.

Additionally, the Commission has adopted two Council recommendation proposals aimed at ensuring the quality of higher education in Europe and promoting attractive and sustainable careers in the sector. These recommendations concern the establishment of a European quality assurance and recognition system and the promotion of stimulating academic careers for teachers and researchers.

The proposal has been enthusiastically welcomed by member states and academic institutions, who see this plan as a unique opportunity to strengthen European higher education and enhance Europe's global competitiveness.
