Italian Language Across Borders
ROME – The opening ceremony of the XXV Week of the Italian Language in the World Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo, took place at the MAXXI Auditorium. This is the main international event dedicated to the promotion of the Italian language globally, held from 13 to 19 October 2025.

The event, promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Società Dante Alighieri, revolved around the theme “Italian Language Across Borders”, anticipating the First International Conference on Italophony, scheduled for 19 November.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, highlighted the importance of promoting the Italian language, both in Italy and abroad, as a vehicle for culture, dialogue, and the enhancement of national heritage. The Minister also announced the establishment of the Italian Language Day, organized in collaboration with the Società Dante Alighieri and the Swiss Government, as a moment of exchange among countries that share Italian as an official language or cultural heritage.

At the conclusion of the institutional session, two roundtables were held focusing on the promotion of the Italian language worldwide, with contributions from Andrea Bajani (winner of the 2025 Strega Prize), Massimo Bray (Director General of Treccani), Giuseppe Antonelli (Full Professor of History of the Italian Language at the University of Pavia), and Cristina Di Giorgio (Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Santiago, Chile).

Minister Tajani reiterated that the Italian language, as a vehicle of the country’s many excellences, continues to be an important tool for cultural promotion and international cooperation.

The 25th Week of Italian Language and the upcoming Italian Language Day thus remain key occasions for the dissemination of Italian globally, promoting the language as a tool for dialogue, growth, and cultural diplomacy.

Within its role of supporting the dissemination of Italian educational opportunities abroad, Uni-Italia participated in several initiatives promoted or supported by the Italian diplomatic-consular network, delivering presentations on the Italian higher education system both in person and virtually. In particular, Uni-Italia was involved in events organized or realized in collaboration with Italian offices in:

  1. Ulan Bator (Mongolia) – Presentation at the Italy-Mongolia Center to a class of Italian language students.
  2. Pristina (Kosovo) – Participation in Erasmus+ Day at the Kosovo Erasmus+ Office.
  3. San José (Costa Rica) – Virtual information session on Italian academic offerings organized with the University of Costa Rica (UCR).
  4. Managua (Nicaragua) – Participation in the Feria de Becas de la Unión Europea at the Universidad Americana (UAM).
  5. Sofia (Bulgaria) – Participation in the Study in Italy Fair.
